![]() ![]() Task units with different specialties make up the Seventh Fleet In October 1944, the Seventh Fleet was a significant part of the Allied forces at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history. From 1943 to 1945, the majority of the Royal Australian Navy’s ships were also part of Task Force 74. The commander of the Seventh Fleet was also the commander of Allied naval forces in the SWPA. It served in General Douglas MacArthur’s South West Pacific Area (SWPA). Short Historyĭuring World War II, the Seventh Fleet was formed on March 15, 1943, in Brisbane, Australia, under the command of Admiral Arthur S. Its primary responsibilities include providing joint command in the event of a natural disaster or military operation, as well as operational command of all US naval forces in the region. With 50 to 70 ships, 150 aircraft, and 27,000 Sailors and Marines, it is currently the largest of the forward-deployed US fleets.
